Compre Family Mourns Deceased High School Teacher

Dunia Escoto

Tonight, Roaring Creek resident and teacher, twenty-eight-year-old Jodine Gill and her thirty-year-old colleague Dania Portillo remain hospitalized at the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital, recovering from varying degrees of injuries sustained during a traffic accident last Friday at mile thirty-five on the Hummingbird Highway. Just after four o’clock, Gill lost control of her 2004 Nissan X-Terra SUV as she traveled to Belmopan; the vehicle overturned and was found off the side of the road. Gill sustained head injuries and abrasions to both her arms, while Portillo received a broken left leg and were both taken to the Western Regional Hospital before being transferred to the K.H.M.H.  But there was a third teacher traveling with them. Thirty-one-year-old Dunia Escoto was a Spanish teacher at Belmopan Comprehensive School and died following the RTA. News of the accident spread like wildfire through the school. Vice Principal Medeline Guzman spoke with News Five today about the difficulty they had getting an ambulance to the scene of the accident.

“I got word of the accident on July first around four-fifteen the evening through my secretary, who is actually related to one of the persons in the accident; she was frantic heading to the scene of the accident. And I tried to make arrangements on my part in getting the ambulance to the scene. We had a little bit of difficulty getting that done because the Belmopan Hospital, Western Regional, was actually arguing about jurisdiction in terms of who should go—if it is Dangriga or Belmopan. That got me really upset and I needed up calling the private ambulance place in Belmopan, which is Miss Lavern Flowers, but she told me that her ambulance was in the Social Security Ride Across [Belize] and she couldn’t assist me at the time. So I decided the best thing to do at that time was meet my teachers at the Belmopan Hospital when they came in so I headed to the hospital then.”

“We actually closed out earlier in June but that day, they were on their last day of workshops actually.”
