Muslim Family Comes Under Siege from Special Branch

Fareed Ahmad

A well-known Belizean family within the local Muslim community was the subject of a predawn raid on Monday at their house in Hattieville.  Former Superintendent of the Belize Central Prison Taheera Ahmad and her sibling Fareed, proprietor of the Real Barbershop, along with seventeen other relatives, were rounded up in an operation conducted by the Special Branch of the police department.  They were trooped to the Eastern Division South Headquarters on Raccoon Street where they were held for approximately ten hours without being informed of a reason for their detention.  The incident is particularly disturbing since the family, including elderly grandparents and pregnant wives, was prohibited from contacting other members of the community during their confinement.  While some of the officers, according to Fareed Ahmad, acquitted themselves properly in effecting the arrest, others weren’t as professional.  There are complaints that some of the officers simply stormed into the premises without affording the women time to properly attire themselves.  During the raid the family’s belongings, more specifically all electronic devices such as cell phones, tablets and laptops were confiscated.  Also withheld was a copy of the Holy Koran.  The family was subsequently released without an explanation or apology.  While a motive for the sweep has not been determined, there are concerns among other members of the Muslim community that local law enforcement may be attempting to establish a nexus between Muslims in Belize and terror groups such ISIS or Al Qaeda.  News Five attempted to contact head of Special Branch, former GSU Commander Marco Vidal, but all attempts were fruitless.  The Ahmad family says it will be issuing a statement on Wednesday.

And you $%^&*() have just created a problem that so far , Belize has been able to stay clear of. What do you think this will do to some who have migrated this far and maybe had the notion of a radical mindset but saw that Belize was different in it’s treatment towards them so they remained calm? You have just stirred up an ants’ nest when this goes viral and international. Illiteracy is a hell of a thing.

not bad because really this community seem to turn a blind eye to all the atrocities begin done with no remorse by ISIS. So if they would really understand that the whole world is hating this religion due to the ongoing caliphate thing they might understand that every once in a while they will be subject to such things. Sorry for them but realITy in this world is crumbling into a stage where trust has been lost for this religion regardless if i know you or not, just look at the U.S what they have been going through and here it might be a breeding center, since Belize is not yet sufficiently prepared to tackle this caliphate believers if they would be here already. THE REAL THINGS IS “WE NEVER KNOW” WHO IS WHO?

Was this family targeted because of the Orlando incident or because of the ISIS? Either way that’s a violation of their rights. Since when is it right to discriminate against someone because others of same faith has committed a crime? So should we be looking at our Catholic priests to prevent them from robbing our young boys of their innocence? Is it proper to measure everyone with the same measuring stick because of their faith, sexual orientation or preferences? I think this is one can of worms that did not need to be opened.

It seems we love to do the right thing to the wrong people. The Government has a rite to ensure we are not involved locally with terrorism. The issue at hand is where is the intelligence to support the raid originating Are we now acting off of hunches given to us by our international partners. we also need to ensure that we respect our own laws and rite s of our citizens.we cannot circumvent our own laws for the sake of the greater good.

How come i have never heard of such a raid being conducted in the Lebanese community in Belize. They are also Muslims. No one has visited their homes and their places of business.
