Katy Sealy is Triumphant at Central American Championships

Gold medalist Katy Sealy is back in the country after crushing her competition in the recently held Central American Championships in El Salvador.  Sealy is one of several Belizean athletes who performed exceptionally well during the regional games.  She participated in the heptathlon and broke the Central American record.  The achievement, according to the young athlete, was the result of rigorous training which included running and weight training.  Sealy excelled to first place in all but two events.  News Five spoke with her this evening as she shared the experience.

Katy Sealy, Gold Medalist, Central American Games

“I was really, really pleased with my performance in El Salvador and I knew training had been going well.  I knew I was in good shape and I was really looking forward to it.  The track out there was great, conditions were really good as well so I knew, you know, if I go out there and perform that it was going to be a good result.  I didn’t achieve any personal bests in any of the events but I was consistent in all seven so that added up to a total score which was the best score I’ve ever scored.  Obviously this improved my national record and broke the Central American record as well.”

“The preparations on your end, being able to get out there every day and train and get yourself ready for this particular event, what was that like?”

Katy Sealy

“It’s hard work.  I train everyday and I try and cover the different events as well, so some training I do long jumps, hurdles, other sessions I do javelin and shot put.  So I try to cover all of the different events throughout the week and then obviously it’s a lot of running, weight training and working the gym as well.”

“Describe to us the feeling of representing a small country such as Belize but still being able to have the kind of talent that makes us formidable opponents on the regional and international stage.”

Katy Sealy

“I mean, I absolutely love Belize, I love coming out here and I am so proud to represent Belize.  It’s a beautiful country and I love my teammates.  It’s a brilliant atmosphere whenever we go to a competition.  It’s so good and we’re always up there fighting with the other countries.  I mean six Central American records we broke within the team and it shows that we are capable of performing with the rest of them.”
