Terror on Queen Street: 4 Persons Shot During Attempt on Life of Notorious Figure

Belize City resident, Elroy Perdomo Junior, was murdered on Thursday afternoon during a funeral procession four hours after he was released from police custody. If that brazen murder sent shockwaves, today, a shooting in front of the Queen Street Police Station at eight-twenty this morning caused tremors in one of the busiest commercial areas. Business houses closed down as fear spread of reprisals. A fifteen year old minor is the prime suspect in the shooting; he was apprehended shortly after. The target was Brandon Tillett, a well known street figure, but a police officer and three others were caught in a crossfire between police and the gunman. News Five’s Duane Moody reports from Queen Street.

Police Corporal Alrick Arnold remains in critical condition tonight at the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital after undergoing surgery for gunshot wounds to the chest and abdomen. Arnold was among four persons who were shot around eight-thirty this morning just outside the compound of the Queen Street Police Station. Forty-four year old Elroy Saldano of Pink’s Alley, thirty-four year old school warden Graciela Castillo and twenty-four year old office clerk Kean Smith were also shot to various parts of the body.

For about four hours today, Queen Street Police Station was on lockdown and businesses along the stretch from the precinct to ground zero were forced to close following the early morning shooting. One gunman made an attempt on the life of prominent street figure Brandon Tillett, who along with Saldano, went to the station to check in, as part of a bail condition imposed on him.

Hilberto Romero, Head of CIB, Eastern Division

“Investigation revealed that the person exiting the compound at the time was Brandon Tillett; he was along with one Elroy Saldano and they were approached by a male person who fired shots at them.”

ACP Dezerie Phillips, Regional Commander, Eastern Division North

“It is no secret that Brandon Tillett is a known gang figure from the George Street Gang and as far as I am concerned; it really doesn’t matter where the incident occurred because criminal minded persons out there have their intention, their motive, their targets and they will find their targets wherever it goes. It just happens that the target that they were looking for strategically was coming out of the police station at the very same time.”

Corporal Arnold, who works at the Court, was on his way to the Queen Street Police Station when he came up on the gunman in the act and drew his service weapon in defense of the victims. A crossfire ensued between Arnold and the shooter.

“Around eight-twenty a.m., upon reports received of a shooting near the gate at the Queen Street Police Station, CIB personnel visited the area where information gathered is that there was an exchange of gunfire between a police officer and a person who apparently shot at a person who was exiting a compound. As a result of the exchange of gunfire, four persons received varying degrees of injuries. Corporal Alrick Arnold was shot to the chest and abdomen; Elroy Saldano was shot to the chest; Kean Smith was shot to the elbow and Graciela Smith was shot to the calf.”

ACP Dezerie Phillips

“Corporal Arnold received a gunshot wound to the upper chest. He has just completed a successful surgery we have to say. We are thankful that he is in a critical condition, but we are hopeful that he pulls through.”

The incident occurred while the thoroughfare was highly trafficked by students and residents. One witness told News Five off camera that she was standing in front of the police station when the shots were fired. It was a most frightening experience for her as she ran for cover.

Voice of Witness

“I heard the first shot but I thought it was maybe a dynamite or pop shot. And man I noh di tell yo no lie…I bruk wey from there so fast noh. I only see man drop. I see the police drop; I see the man from the bike drop, but I noh see nothing. And I run and jump over something weh mi deh deh and run straight ina wah shop fi cover. When I reach dah di shop—me and my friend—I see wah lady come and ih di lean up on the car; she get shot ina ih foot weh wah bullet bust through. And then shortly after wah next lady run come ina di shop; she get shot pan ih hand.”

Two officers within the compound immediately pursued the gunman, who was apprehended near the Swing Bridge. He has since been identified as a fifteen year old minor.

Hilberto Romero

“He was detained and a search conducted on him which police found one nine millimeter pistol with eight live rounds and he was taken into custody. He is a fifteen year old minor. We are still trying to establish his connections and his affiliations, but the investigation is ongoing at this time.”

While a motive has not been ascertained at this time, it is frightening and worrisome that an attack of this nature would be staged in front of a police station. Do criminals have no regard for law and order?

ACP Dezerie Phillips

“Well definitely it concerns us that we have persons out there who feel brave enough to come out in broad daylight, not disguised or anything, and would fire upon persons right within the confines of where a police station is. That simply shows that there is a loss of respect for authority and law and order. But we want to assure the public that the police will do anything and everything in our power to ensure that persons who perpetrate the law are brought to justice and swiftly.”

Voice of Witness

“It is very frightening because it is in front of the police station and students going to school…you know so it is very frightening.”

Duane Moody

“Lotta people out there at the time?”

Voice of Witness

“Lotta people…from kids. Most of them were kids going to school and parents taking the children to school. So it was very, very frightening.”
