P.U.P. Leader Comments on Lack of Confidence in Foreign Minister

Wilfred Elrington

Immediately following the Istanbul talks, the government made the infamous public statement that Belizeans have untrammeled access to our side of the Sarstoon. The ink was barely dry on that release when Guatemala declared not so. In fact, Guatemala wrote in a diplomatic note on May twenty-eighth, that there was no agreement of that nature, informal or otherwise.  Today, Briceño was asked if it was not safer if the P.U.P. was engaged to monitor the process. This is what he had to say.

“Sir there are some who don’t have a, a fair amount or a section of the population don’t have confidence with Mister Elrington as foreign minister.  I’ve heard it glibly said that adult supervision required.  Wouldn’t the opposition be doing its duty if it sent someone to watch over the man’s shoulders to make sure that since interpretation seems to be a big problem, because we came out of that meeting with one interpretation and the Guatemalans came out with another, wouldn’t it be best that another party such as the opposition was there?  Wouldn’t the national interest be best served by that?”

John Briceño

John Briceño, Party Leader, P.U.P.

“You can give adult supervision when you have the authority to be able to do something over the child that you are supervising.  But if you just di watch over di child and di child still di misbehave and di jump up di scream and di bruk up things and no wahn listen to you, what would you do Jules?  Apart from if da your child yo wah wahn box ahn.  We can’t do that, so why are we going to be around and wasting taxpayers’ money on these trips if we are not going to play a meaningful role in this.  We want to play a meaningful role and we are saying that if the government wants to go down the wrong road we are not going to be a part of that.  We don’t want to be a part of that.  We are saying that we are prepared to work with the government, I have been saying this over and over and I repeat it again, we don’t want to play politics with this matter.”

PUP, don’t be a part of the sell-out. Yes, be careful, because this is going down a very wrong road, and only Barrow and Elrington deserve and will receive the fury of the people.

  2. Manuel Pinto says:
