1 Man Detained for Murder of Marlon Bonner, But Police Need Your Help

Marlon Bonner

In another case of murder, thirty-four-year-old Marlon Anthony Bonner was callously dispatched in a hail of bullets on Sunday evening as he awaited a turn to play a game of basketball on the Fabers Road Basketball Court.  The deadly shooting was witnessed by several persons, including those who were at the court at the time of the incident, as well as passersby in the vicinity of Central American Boulevard and Fabers Road.  Despite the fact that Belize City police have detained one man in connection with the homicide, charges cannot be brought against him since witnesses are not forthcoming with statements that would assist in their investigation.  It is a frustrating predicament, one in which the forty-eight hour window of opportunity to levy any charges is quickly closing in on the department.  Assistant Commissioner of Police Chester Williams gave a brief update on the status of their investigation.

ACP Chester Williams, Regional Commander, Eastern Division South

“As I have said in the press brief on Monday, that we know exactly who the person is who did the act and we have that person in custody as we speak.  But the difficulty we are encountering right now is to get people who are willing to give statements so that we will be able to effect an arrest of that individual and we are currently at that stage, a deadlock within the investigation.  We cannot move forward and we need people to understand that yes, as police officers it’s our duty to investigate but investigation requires the police going to the public and getting information and where that information is not forthcoming in the form of statements then we will not be able to proceed.  You know, often times people complain, they say so many people see and police cannot arrest.  Yes, so many people see but we cannot arrest if there’s no evidence and the evidence must come to us in the form of statements from individuals.  And we must also understand the reason why people don’t want to cooperate in terms of giving statements.  We hear people talk about witness protection programs but you and I know the difficulty with that. If you take someone and send them to Punta Gorda we’re not taking them out of the reach of the persons who may want to get to them.  They are still within reach and you still have to think about the family members and so forth, so we understand people’s plight in terms of not wanting to cooperate but at the same time too I also believe that as a community we need to make a stand.  And if we are serious about fighting crime then we must do it collectively, together.  It cannot be done only by the police.”

Its not only the witness protection, (if you dont even try it how can you already fail it?)but also the very attitude of the police. even the lawyers make known the identity of witnesses to the suspect so that his cahoots can harass and threaten the witness and in some instances, even kill. Even cops threatens witnesses. Hell, even cops kick the shit out of witnesses to testify or not to testify. Unfortunately, unlike the police, we cant beat the killer of our loved ones to within an inch of their life. Only the police have the license to do that.
