Does Economic Climate Stimulate Small Business Development?

Tracy Panton

The current economic climate does little to stimulate or support entrepreneurs and small business development. Several small businesses have had to close, and many more are struggling because of heavy tax burdens and the cost of doing business. News Five asked Minister Panton what is being done to assist companies to survive the economic crunch.

Tracy Panton, Minister of State, Trade and Commerce

“I think that is the whole reason BELTRAIDE has shifted some of its focus from just promoting foreign direct investment and the export sector to looking at small business development. We have a small business development center, we are looking and information and technology. Just tomorrow in fact, we are going to be doing our handing over to UB of an innovation and technological center because we feel that it is very important that people understand the mechanics of the trade; that they have the right tools in terms of training, in terms of marketing, in terms of looking at fiscal management of small businesses in this country and hopefully we can broker the relationships with other institutions like the University of Belize to ensure that we can provide the support mechanism and the infrastructure for our small business to continue to grow and to develop  and to be able to be sustained even when the economy gets a little challenging.”
