Kenly Young and Angelina Urbina Top Scorers in 2016 PSE

Kenly Young

Since last week we have been chasing behind the results of the Primary School Exam. As you know, the results of the competitive examinations are highly anticipated since some high schools use them to determine admissions, but it is officially intended to assess achievement of content and skills in English, Mathematics, Social Studies and Science.  The results were released late this evening and we can say that this year the district schools fared well among the top twenty-five scorers. But first, seven thousand two hundred and thirty-five students sat the exams, that figure is slightly up from 2015. Other statistics show that forty-seven percent of the students scored a satisfactory level performance in English, while in Math; only thirty-five percent scored a satisfactory level. While the grades remain about the same as last year, it means that the students are under performing in English and Math and those two subject areas remain challenging and of great concern. The good news is in social studies where scores improved as well as in science.

Angelina Urbina

Now, to the outstanding schools and students. There is a tie for the top scorer. The students are Kenly Young from Saint Andrew Anglican School in San Ignacio and Angelina Urbina from La Inmaculada in Orange Walk Town with three hundred and ninety-one points out of four hundred. Third place went to another female student Marcela Lozano from Bernice Yorke. There was another tie for fourth place:  Ranai Gonzalez from Belize Elementary and Hugo Lin from Saint Andrew’s Anglican. Four students tied for sixth place Mihir Karnai and Terry Su from Belize Elementary School, Erwin Arthurs from Bernice Yorke and Tsiyon Julien from The Shepherd Academy in Cayo. There are also three students that placed tenth: Emily Quinto from Belize Elementary, Jiamei May Chen from Bernice Yorke and Darla Guerra from Pancotta Primary. We’ll have a more in depth look in Monday’s newscast.
