Lisa Shoman Comments on Sarstoon Situation

The Sarstoon has been a fixture in the newscast for months, but what’s the latest on the river? Can we go there without being stopped, or not? The P.U.P. did last week, but then we learned that in effect Guatemala had granted permission for that familiarization trip. In fact, to make that point clear, Guatemala also sent off a letter to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs reiterating that they still own the Sarstoon but made a concession that one day. So then, is there really any agreement, whether informal or formal, on untrammeled access for Belizeans in the Sarstoon?

Lisa Shoman, Member of Opposition’s Belize/Guatemala Committee

“Not according to the diplomatic note that Guatemala sent last week. They made it abundantly clear that the visit of the People’s United party parliamentarians and others was an exception because they had been told it was an educational trip and the Guatemalans therefore had no objection to it – meaning therefore if you’re reading between the lines, nobody else better try because they asserted that they still claim all of the river, and they claim that there must be therefore certain protocols that we must follow. And those protocols do not at this point allow for unhindered access.”

“Where do you think the miscommunication is…because there is some sort of miscommunication or misinformation?”

Lisa Shoman

“I don’t know that there is a miscommunication, and that is as far as I am willing to do. I’m not going to try and spell and guess what the motives of Guatemala are. My concern is how we respond but more importantly how we plan to deal with the situation moving forward. We cannot always be in response mode. Sometimes we have got to have a plan to move ahead and I think this is what Belizeans are looking to their government to have – an internationalization plan, a plan to deal with the issue, and a plan to move forward to whatever type of dispute resolution there is because we cannot afford to just sit here and allow this thing to fester. That’s the one thing we can’t afford to do.”

  1. Steve says:

Guatemala is wanting to make us used to the idea that we have lost the Sarstoon, and move on. It won’t happen. This UDP government better buckle up, or they will be facing the ire of the Belizean nation. We will look to replace them in less than half their current term.
