Rift? What Rift in the U.D.P.?

Darrell Bradley

Patrick Faber was sworn in as Deputy Prime Minister on Tuesday, and as expected, a majority of Cabinet did not show up to share in his proud moment. While not one of the members of Cabinet will admit it on the record, there is a very deep rift in the hallowed halls of government caused by the recent campaign, convention and subsequent victory for Faber. Today we asked Mayor Darrell Bradley about that rift and not surprisingly, he told News Five that there is none.

Darrell Bradley, Belize City Mayor

“Recognize that we’re dealing with politics. Recognize also that when you’re dealing with politics you’re dealing with people who have differing opinions. I myself have had differing opinions with members of the party in the past .It doesn’t mean that those rifts create any kind of serious issue. We are human beings and we deal with a political culture. But we’re all mature. We are one united Party. I was very pleased to be there yesterday to see the honorable Patrick Faber sworn in as Deputy prime Minister. I have indicated to him personally that my support and encouragement are there for him. I can’t speak to why other Ministers were not there, but I know that the United Democratic Party is united in working for our communities and the country. We’re speaking about road safety today. There is a tremendous amount of good work that has gone on in terms of infrastructure and other developments and members of our Party are united. That’s not to say that we’re not human beings and in a contest which is contested there can only be one winner. So that I don’t think that the fact that there was only one winner produces any rift which cannot be healed. I think that Patrick Faber in terms of his response was very sober. He gave an olive branch. I think that he has the personality that can bring the party together and that will promote working together in collaboration, but I don’t think that anybody can speculate. The party is united. We are successful, we’re winning and we’re doing the people’s business.”
