Fisheries Department Busts Illegal Hicatee Harvest

The Fisheries Department made a huge bust this morning of the endangered hicatee turtle. For two weeks, they have been monitoring persons of interest carrying out illegal operations in the areas of the Belize River and the Black Creek. The department intercepted a vehicle this afternoon in the Lord’s Bank area with undersized hicatee. They followed leads which landed them at Biscayne Village were a significant amount of hicatees and gill nets were found. Both Goldburn and Hilberto Seguro were found with sixteen hicatees and will face charges accordingly.

Rigoberto Quintana, Fisheries Officer

“In Belize, we have laws that protect them, we have a close season during the month of May and the open season people can only have three, but we also have size limit for females. Females have to be within fifteen point two and seventeen point two inches total length. Operations this afternoon, fisheries officers intercepted a white vehicle by Ladyville, by the Lord’s Bank junction. There they found three hicatees in that vehicle so that is what we are processing today and apparently two of them are undersized. The other operation, following more leads, the officers went to the Biscayne area where the same persons Goldburn Seguro and his relative live and there the officers found thirteen more turtles. We are processing the evidence now and they also found hicatee nets which are also prohibited.”

“Sir talk to us about that where this has been ongoing. It is obvious that these persons have caught these for commercial use, to sell. Talk to us about that.”

Rigoberto Quintana

“These turtles are critically endangered in the region. We have laws also that prohibit the buy and sell of turtles; this is just for traditional consumption for local residents. That’s why we are enforcing our laws and we have stepped up enforcement operations during the dry season noh. We have for the past month, we have confiscated at least six hicatee nets in the rivers and we were successful with this one noh.”

Duane Moody

“Now sir, I know you said that of the three that were initially confiscated, two of them did not meet the standard. But of the thirteen that were found at their residence, what of those?”

Rigoberto Quintana

“Well the guy is still processing, measuring them as you can see and we have not determined if they are illegal size, but I can tell you that the person at that residence should have never had more than three in his possession so he will be charged for that.”
