“Well what happened during the course of the morning, we were trying to get in touch with Leonel Gillett. We tried several times but his phone went straight to voice mail. So after one in the afternoon, myself, his sister and a friend went to check at his home to see if everything was okay with him.”

Sr. Supt. Howell Gillett, O.C., Belmopan Police

“The body had gunshot wounds to the abdomen or the stomach area as well as to the head. Sometime after one p.m. we got the call that there was the lifeless body of a male person. We immediately proceeded to the area and we confirmed that yes, we can mention the name beucase the family has been informed. Leonel Cadle Gillett, forty-five year old taxi operator of Belmopan. He was a resident of the same area that he was murdered.”

Gillett lived almost a mile off the Hummingbird Highway in a secluded area.  The father of three was a humble man, liked by many and wasn’t known to have enemies. But was he killed in an aggravated burglary? Investigations reveal that his house had been ransacked.

Sr. Supt. Howell Gillett

“There is no definitive motive at this moment, but yes preliminary investigation is showing that somebody or someone or some persons might have ransacked his house as that is what we observed upon arriving at the area. They are conducting a post mortem which I believe will shed some more light as to what may have occurred last night. As you know the investigation is pretty young, as I alluded to, and we have to canvass the area. As I said previously, it is an isolated area so there are a few neighbors in the area. But we are doing our groundwork to try to bring closure to this.”

A post-mortem examination on the body was conducted on site on Wednesday due to the state of decomposition before transported to the San Ignacio Hospital morgue. Duane Moody for News Five.

No one has been detained for this latest homicide in the Belmopan jurisdiction.
