Patrick Faber Says Guatemalan Negotiators Cannot Be Trusted

On Friday News Five was stopped by Guatemalan military as we tried to enter the Sarstoon. They claimed that we were in their national waters. That claim is nothing new, but it is distressing because just days before Belize and Guatemala had allegedly come to an informal understanding that Belizeans would be allowed untrammeled access to our portion of the Sarstoon. So from a position where Guatemala is our friend and neighbor, at least according to Foreign Minister Wilfred Elrington, there is now official rhetoric accusing that nation of being disingenuous. Faber told us that the nature of the discussion on Guatemala in Cabinet asserted that they cannot be trusted.

“Exactly the case, and we discussed this issue this morning in Cabinet, and what we said is that we now realize that given the fact that you really cannot take the word of anybody in Guatemala it would seem that is in the discussions and negotiations. That is evident from the turning back of the media personnel who the Guatemalans intercepted after the Istanbul agreement. And what we said is that we’d now like to have a third party be involved to make sure that these agreements are overseen, and we agreed that that would be of course the O.A.S., and so we are now going to insist that they be a part of those negotiations and those agreements so that there can be a third party who can say exactly or be a witness if you will to what has been agreed.”
