Briceño Says a Message Must Be Sent to Guatemala

The Sarstoon River is currently a study in confusion and controversy. Here’s why. We’ve always owned half of the southernmost waterway. Guatemala has a claim, but we own it. Things are different now. Guatemala appears to own it, while we have a claim. The river is monitored by GAF who insist that the B.D.F. must ask permission each week to go to Cadenas. And Belizean civilians can’t go anywhere near the Sarstoon, thanks to that SI which is being challenged. So forget claims and treaties and rhetoric in press conferences and meeting rooms – who’s in control of the Sarstoon? That’s what Briceño says it is essential to clear up now, and it’s one of the reasons the P.U.P. is so hell-bent on challenging the S.I. and going to the Sarstoon.

“It’s also very important to point out to the Guatemalans or to the Guatemalan authorities that we are not allowing them to have possession of the Sarstoon River. To put it in simplistic terms, you have what you call squatter’s rights, and the minute that Guatemala is allowed full access to the Sarstoon River, we in effect are allowing them control over that area be it for thirty days or one week or even one day is too much in our minds, and that is why we have been challenging this SI that the government passed. Politically, from the Guatemalan perspective, not from our perspective, it’s just the very idea that you allow them to start to have possession, then they could try to start to build a case that they have had possession of the Sarstoon all along. Remember all of a sudden they started to say that the protocol has been that the B.D.F. has to ask permission of the Guatemalan military to go to Cadenas when that has never been in place. So the Guatemalans are skilfully trying to build a case that they have had possession of the Sarstoon. And we don’t want to give them not a single opportunity for them to try to make that argument.”

Just give them Guats the Sarstoon already. It is just a Zika mosquito filled jungle and mud. No Belizean wanted it or even knew where it was before Guatemala laid claim.
