5Cs Donate to Farmers in Trio

Mark Bynoe

Farmers in the Trio area were the recipients of funding from the Caribbean Community Climate Change Center. The funding was a part of the 5Cs assistance to combat the threats of climate change, including deforestation due to lack of water, forest fires which threaten crops and lack of sufficient arable land.  The primary initiative includes attaining land, donation of cacao seedlings and technical help with training for climate resilient crops.

“It’s not a case that these issues are new. But the idea is that these issues are likely gonna be exacerbated, with a changing climate regime. So, with that focus we then looked at projects we had within the center that would possibly be able to finance this particular initiative and we were able to find two hundred and fifty thousand US under the UK DFID programme and so for the last two years we have been funding this project in the Trio area.”

“First we prepare our nursery place. It is twenty eight to thirty thousand saplings that we plant. In the future that we don’t want to work for somebody else, we want to for our own. So, from there when it start to produce more then my thinking is that we can just be a  boss then and have workers beside of me. It is five of us in my family; me, my wife and my sons. I am taking care of a little girl and my aim is to give them an education that is why I am working hard so that their life will be different in the future.”

The partnership was made possible by the UK D.F.I.D. and Ya’axche Conservation and directly benefits two hundred individuals who make up farming families in Trio.
