P.U.P. Legal Advisor Says Party Should Stay Within the Law

Andrew Marshalleck

The National Party Council of the P.U.P. has also approved an expedition to the Sarstoon by the Party. As legal advisor, the media asked Marshalleck if he is in support of the planned trip.  His advice is contrary to the party’s position.

Andrew Marshalleck, Attorney

“No, my advice to them is that they have to obey the law and unless and until there is a declaration that the law is no good, it is the law. So that the trip to the Sarstoon, if they are confronted and prohibited, then you would have to obey.”

“Sir and then you always here in sports that you should not mistake activity for accomplishment. Is the P.U.P. just trying to do something to say well bwai yo can’t say we never try; in terms of is it just doing something symbolically which has no practical effect?”

Andrew Marshalleck

“Well if the claim goes forward and there is a determination, there will be a practical effect, in that we will know for certain and have guidance from the court as to when it is correct for powers of this nature to be exercise going forward, should a similar situation ever arise again. That’s the only value to be had from it given that as you say the law will be spent by the time the case comes on to hearing. That is so. But the SI is made largely, we believe, for political reasons and for that very reason, the response to it is largely political, including the legal challenge. That’s the reality of it.”

In related news, the P.U.P. is expected to join the B.N.T.U. at a march this Friday in the city. The Belize National Teachers Union is also calling for a repeal of the Sarstoon Law, which expires May twenty-seventh.
