Reuben Price Walks From 2014 Murder Charge

Reuben Price

Another murder trial by judge ended with an acquittal today for the accused. In a no case submission, Reuben Price’s attorney, Simeon Sampson submitted that the only evidence the prosecution had against Price was an alleged confession statement which was not provided willingly so there was no evidence to substantiate the charge of murder. The judge ruled the confession statement inadmissible, and the prosecutor closed its case. Police claimed the then eighteen year old Price shot and killed Steven Perez. The murder occurred at the corner of Dolphin and Iguana Streets on June twenty-sixth, 2011, but Price walked free after Judge Troadio Gonzalez upheld a no case submission. There were no eyewitnesses to the murder and according to CIB Police, Price confessed saying he borrowed a gun and shot Perez over a girl. But in the trial, which went into a voir dire for more than a week, Prosecutor Kileru Awich of the D.P.P.’s Office called eight witnesses to testify including police officers and well known JP Modesto Madril. The police testified that Price confessed to Perez’s murder, but when Price took the stand, the tables turned when he alleged police brutality as the reason why he confessed to the murder. This morning in his ruling, Judge Gonzalez concluded to say that based on the evidence, Price did not give a statement on his free will. Attorney Sampson explains.

Simeon Sampson, Attorney

“There was a confession statement taken by police. My client alleges that he gave that statement because he was beaten and tazered. Police officers testified to saying that my client was not speaking the truth. Fortunately, my client went to the hospital where the doctor found harm upon his body. Therefore, the judge had to agree to my submission that that statement was extracted from my client because of police brutality. Consequently the statement was not admitted into evidence and there being no other evidence, a not guilty plea was entered.”
