Sandra Bodden

Also on the island, police have made a significant firearm bust. Last Tuesday, a high-powered MP-Forty submachine gun was found south of San Pedro Town in an area known as the Mosquito Coast. The bust also yielded other firearms, ammunition and drugs. Three San Pedro residents were surprised by officers on patrol as they were removing the drugs and the firearms from a boat. Police quickly detained and charged street figures Christian Espat, Rene Cumul Junior and Jose Armando Guillen and they remain on remand at the Hattieville prison. Superintendent Sandra Bodden told News Five that the arrests came about with the assistance of the community.

Supt. Sandra Bodden, O.C., San Pedro Police

“Yes, this second incident that you are talking about occurred on the third of May about three-forty p.m., police were patrolling in the south where they received information of suspicious persons in the area. They visited the area where they detained three male persons; they conducted a search on a knapsack which led to the discovery of seven, twelve-gauge cartridges; it also led to the discovery of a twelve-gauge pump action shotgun, four other twelve gauge cartridges and one MP40 nine millimeter submachine gun. Like I said, three persons were detained at the time and they have since been arrested and charged for kept a prohibited firearm, kept unlicensed firearm and ammunition and also for drug trafficking. The persons that were arrested were Christian Espat, Rene Cumul Junior and Jose Armando Guillen.”

“Those persons are known to be drug peddlers or something like that on the island for them to be discovered with it? I understand that they were taken the drugs out of a boat.”

Supt. Sandra Bodden

“The persons mentioned, yes, are known to police; we have come across them before.”

Duane Moody

“Now ma’am, the size of the drugs, the amount of drugs that was discovered.”

Supt. Sandra Bodden

“The drug was weighed and it was weighed at approximately two point one pounds.”

Duane Moody

“Suspected cannabis?”

Supt. Sandra Bodden

“Yes…two point one pounds. We continue to put patrols in the areas; we have been working closely with the residents of the area as well as the security guards from the area. We know that that area has been a relatively peaceful area for us and we hope to continue to keep it that way. These incidents are rather unfortunate, especially the recent death of Mister Almendarez, but like I said, we’ve put in extra patrols in the area and we hope that this area will continue to be a peaceful area for the residents.”
