N.T.U.C.B. President Says He Learned About Amnesty Program on the Local News

There you have it…a refugee program with exceptional oversight from a committee which includes the social partners – Churches, unions and business sector. So we decided to check with the union which has been involved in this refugee program from the start, according to the Minister of State. We caught N.T.U.C.B. President Marvin Mora off-guard today, especially since he told us that he only knows about this program because he heard about it in the news.

Marvin Mora, President, N.T.U.C.B.

“I am aware that there are several committees that deal with issues having to do with Immigration. I am also aware of the representative that sits on the Nationality Scrutinizing Committee, and that rep has been sending in reports, but nothing has come to us in regards to anything that has to do with refugees. As far as I am concerned, nothing so far.”

“Now are you concerned about the reports that you’re hearing about a refugee registration program that is ongoing since November last year?”

Marvin Mora

“I’m actually concerned about that and many other things. From the general council or the National Trade Union Congress’ point of view, there are a lot of things that the country needs to do with regard to addressing the issue of nationality, the issue of residency and other issues that have to do with crime and the movement of people. But then at the end of the day it is only through participation and collaboration and consultation that we will get these things ironed out. But if there is no consultation or there is minimal consultation we are going to have problems. Because at the end of the day you are going to have a program that is a free for all. I believe that is the main concern of everybody here, not only the Congress of the N.T.U.C.B. but also of every Belizean. You don’t want a situation where anybody can just apply to get a refugee status or resident status and they come into our country and they become part of our society. Two, three, five years from now they can apply for nationality and get it. We know nothing about these people. We don’t know what their criminal record shows, what skills they bring into this country, we don’t know absolutely anything about these people other than what they tell the people at the Immigration Department.”
