What’s the Union’s Role on Refugee Committee?

Marvin Mora

Mora promised to conduct an immediate internal check to determine the union’s role, if any, on any committee dealing with the registration of refugees under any current refugee program.

Marvin Mora, President, N.T.U.C.B.

“I only heard about that report this morning. I wasn’t aware of it. I’ve heard other comments like I mentioned before about certain situations that relate to gang violence and about certain people seeking asylum in our country because of that situation where they get extorted by the gangs in their countries where they live and they are seeking asylum in Belize. But I have never heard about this type of program where there are a lot of people coming in and they apply and they just get it a couple days after. I have never heard about something like that. So definitely the Congress is going to look into it and we are going to try to get to the bottom of it – whether we have a rep there, who’s that rep, whether they have reported, what their reports have contained and whether or not it has been addressed at that level and what the position of the union was at that time.”

This evening Mora contacted us to confirm that the union representative on what is called the Refugee and Asylum Committee knows absolutely nothing about the current refugee program. We weren’t able to reach a church representative for comment, but we have also been reliably informed that the business sector representative has no knowledge of or input in the program.
