Union Has Issues With What Law Represents & How It Was Enacted

Marvin Mora

The N.T.U.C.B. has taken a singular position chiding government for its outwardly impulsive decision to effect the Sarstoon Law.  Its executives, however, were not all sold on the idea that the law is altogether a bad thing, but what is unanimous is that the law is seemingly a knee-jerk reaction which comes with a sweeping effect on the free movement of Belizeans within the country.

“Going back to the N.T.U.C.B.’s position on this piece of law, you mentioned that you guys sat down together and discussed thoroughly what the ramifications of this particular legislation could potentially be.  Was there any objection from within the unions as to the position that the N.T.U.C.B. is taking as a body?”

Marvin Mora, President, N.T.U.C.B.

“We’ve always had differing views, not necessarily objections as such right, but different views.  Some of them have to do with the fact that certain members have more information in regards to what happens within those areas of contention at the border than the rest of us and that’s one of the main reasons why there may be certain differing views.  But in the end all of us agree, one: that the way the act was brought into effect and what the act actually does are two things that really go against the very tenets of democracy and our freedom of movement which is a constitutional right.  So there is absolutely no reason why anybody in their right mind would agree that the way it was done and what it does is perfectly in order in the way we should do things in our country.”

The National Trade Union Congress of Belize says that government’s prohibition of local travel to the Sarstoon is the equivalent of singing from the same song sheet as its Guatemalan counterparts.
