The P.U.P. Is Going to the Sarstoon

John Briceño

The People’s United Party announced on Tuesday that it plans to proceed with a scheduled trip to the Sarstoon River, despite an existing Statutory Instrument forbidding travel to the river now controlled by Guatemalans.  The last trek to the river by a delegation of Belizeans was met with resistance by police and coast guard.  So, will the Opposition be treated differently than the BTV?  Party Leader John Briceño says that if government is really serious, its Guatemalan counterparts can be notified in advance of the visit.

John Briceño, Leader of the Opposition

“As a national party council, should we decide to go that’s going to be over three hundred people and if other people want to join us they are welcomed to do so.  But obviously it has to be under the terms that we are going to put in place first.  For instance, more than anything else it has to be no weapons or anything, that we’re not going to create trouble.  We don’t want to go and pick a fight with the police and the B.D.F. and the coastguard.  I am sure that, I mean, they are as patriotic as us.  They are following the orders of their bosses, so we’re not picking a fight with them. We are determined to point out that we believe that it is unconstitutional, it is an unjust law and that Belizeans should be allowed to go to the Sarstoon, on our side of the Sarstoon.  We need to make that abundantly clear.  I believe that if the government is serious that they can also speak to their counterparts in Guatemala to point out that we are going on a peaceful visit to the Sarstoon.  We’re going to assure them that none of us are going to have any kind of weapons or knives or anything, that we’re going there on a peaceful visit to assert the sovereignty on our side of the Sarstoon River.”
