Will the P.U.P. Be Allowed at the Sarstoon?

So the P.U.P.’s National Executive and delegates of the Party Council may head to the Sarstoon sooner, rather than later. But as the BTV found out on Saturday, heading to that controversial river is not the same thing as actually reaching that controversial river. It’s going to be an interesting proposition for the constitutional Opposition, because the Prime Minister makes it clear that if the P.U.P. is going there to do something routine like fishing, then just maybe the trip will get a green light. But if the intention is to make a political statement, then that’s a different story.

Prime Minister Dean Barrow

“We would hope that given what happened on Saturday, and we would hope that given the report that I am giving today with respect to how quickly the diplomatic effort is proceeding that nobody…let me be specific, that the BTV would not seek to go back during this month’s grace period. That’s really a proper description for the next four weeks or so. But if that turns out not to be the case, the law is there to be enforced.”

“The Opposition Party which is a constitutional body of this country, a bi-partisan system…they have said that they intend to go to that location. What’s your immediate reaction to this and will the state enforce this ban against them?”

Prime Minister Dean Barrow

“Look…the prohibition is meant to deter anybody from going to the Sarstoon for purposes other than regular routine day to day activities such as might in the normal course be taking place. In other words you don’t want to stop anybody from Barranco or any other regular civilian. But if the Opposition’s intention is to try to make a political point, then in the normal course the prohibition would apply to them.”
