PM Barrow Says New SI Won’t Affect Guatemalan Fisherfolk

Dean Barrow

And speaking about fishing, since the Coast Guard and Police are so diligently enforcing the laws in the Sarstoon and surrounds where Belizeans are concerned, will they do the same for Guatemalans who are breaking the law by not only fishing illegally, but also trespassing illegally on the Belizean side of the Sarstoon? You probably thought they would, since what’s good for the Belizean geese should be good for the Guatemalan gander. But you’d be wrong.

Prime Minister Dean Barrow

“Government’s preoccupation is with getting an agreement encouraged and supported by the international community that will provide for clear protocols to govern traffic along the Sarstoon – on our side and on the Guatemalan side. In the meantime there is a distinction to be made between the almost happenstance of the Guatemalan civilians using the Sarstoon for particular purposes having to do with earning a livelihood and so on and the mission of the Belizean Territorial Volunteers which was n the largest sense political – not partisan political but political in terms of their determination to make a patriotic point. In the circumstances we treat the two things differently and we act as we did on Saturday. Let’s be clear. We are not stopping Belizeans simplicitor from going. We stopped the BTV. The law is specific. Civilians are prohibited from going without lawful authority, without permission. Anybody else who is going there not on the kind of mission that could result in the confrontation that we feared and that we were determined to avoid will be given permission.”

There you have it folks! One set of laws (protocol) for the Belizeans and another set for The Guatemalans. One has to wonder; are these decisions made out of fear or favor. Is it Indifference or downright incompetence?

  2. mel says:

if this is the case then meheia and btv should organized one small vessel to go to the sarstoon for fishing purposes. how would pm welcome that move??. send a dorey/canoe everyday into sarstoon with belizean fishermen to fish alonside out guatemalan fisherfolks. that sounds friendly with unity and peace.
