What’s the Next Step for Belizeans in the Sarstoon?

Dean Barrow

With the Sarstoon under lock to Belizeans by both Guatemalan and Belizean law enforcement, all eyes are on the diplomatic channels being maneuvered. That hasn’t worked out so well to this point, but at least where government is concerned, hope springs eternal. But today, PM Barrow explained that it’s not really eternal at all – based on what comes out of talks with Guatemala, the Prime Minister explained that Belizeans could actually have access to the Sarstoon before the month is out, one way or the other.

Prime Minister Dean Barrow

“The diplomatic outreach and in particular the effort to deal with the Sarstoon is proceeding now at an accelerated pace. We are hoping to have the outlines at least of a solution pretty quickly or failing that, it may become clear that no solution will be reached in the short term. I said in the prepared statement that certainly with respect to the expiration date of the law; thereafter, we will make no effort to stop anybody from going to the Sarstoon. If even before that month has expired, it somehow becomes clear to us that the Guatemalans are being absolutely intransigent and that there is no likelihood of reaching an understanding that will respect Belize’s rights, then the determination that we must view the situation differently and proceed along a different line will have to be looked at.”
