An Internet Hub to Expedite Local Online Traffic

The Belize Internet Exchange Point, a coming together of internet service providers to create a local hub for the prompt and expedient exchange of online information, was launched today.  This afternoon at the University of Belize, representatives from Net King, Smart, B.T.L. and, Centaur Communications and Broadband were on hand to formally introduce a platform that has been four years in the making.  B.I.X.P., as it is known, is the brainchild of the Public Utilities Commission which has been working tirelessly to get the project off the ground.  The purpose of B.I.X.P. is to bring together as many service providers to create a local network that will facilitate the flow of information across the internet much faster.

“Technology-enabled development requires investment in local technology infrastructure and that is exactly what the team that has been working toward the development of the exchange point have been working on for the last several months.  And I want to recognize the role that the mediating, refereeing role Mr. Roosevelt Blades has played in keeping these fierce competitors at the collaborative table over the past few months.  Mr. Blades deserves a special round of applause for his efforts and I am sure the ISPs will agree with me that without his interventions we would not be celebrating this launch today.  Mr. Avery spoke about several of the players that played a part in getting us here but there is one unrecognized constituency that all of this going to target and I think for all of us who have used the internet or have it on our telephones or with it at home point is about.”

“As you all know, this comes out of an initiative by the Public Utilities Commission and by all the evidence given, they are on the ball, they are firing on all cylinders in terms of making sure that Belize is not left behind in terms of internet service in this country. so can I ask you to give a round of applause for the Public Utilities Commission. Chairman Avery said to you in his remarks that I have been a good friend of the PUC and he is right, but I am obliged to do so my friends. I am obliged to do so because in so many respects, the PUC is leading the charge that is needed if Belize is going to develop in a way that it is going to be competitive in the region and in the world.”

B.I.X.P. is presently housed at the University of Belize Faculty of Science Campus in Belize City.
