True Story of Guatemalan Aggression must be Internationalized

Eamon Courtenay

Courtenay goes on to say that the internationalization of the Belize/Guatemala crisis, in light of the shooting death of a minor in the Chiquibul, is being used by Guatemalan army generals to push an aggressive military position against Belize.  The full story, he says, must be told in the international community in the manner in which it actually transpired.

Eamon Courtenay, Opposition Representative

“We have to see this for what it is. This type of behavior by Guatemala started before President Morales was elected. There have been a series of incidents and this is just the culmination. He grabbed on to this death as the basis and justification for advancing his new military, full-frontal military approach towards Belize. That is the story that the international community needs to understand. That the response of the Government of Guatemala is not only disproportionate, but it is designed by military men, it is designed by a president who is held hostage by generals and they have adopted a non-peaceful approach to their relations with Belize. The international community needs to understand that. And the international community needs to be persuaded that Guatemala needs to change course—charge course drastically and very quickly.”

Finally, someone saying like it is. We need people who know the real story and can explain it to the international courts. Belize Ambassador to OAS is not making the case.
