Denny Grijalva Guilty of Razing Ancient Mayan Site

Denny Grijalva

After three years of constant adjournments and delays, U.D.P. Orange Walk Central political caretaker Denny Grijalva was found guilty, along with his wife Emelda Grijalva and Project manager Javier Nunez. They had been charged with Willful Damage to an Ancient Monument and Removing of Earth from an Ancient Monument in May of 2013, after it was discovered that Grijalva’s company Demar’s was taking material from the Mayan site of Noh Mul to build roads. Today prosecutor Leroy Banner told News Five that despite the case being prolonged, the evidence was overwhelming and the decision came as no surprise.

“For you to remove dirt from an ancient monument you need a permit. According to the evidence no permit was given to Mr. Grijalva and his company for them to remove any earth from Noh Mul, and Noh Mul is an ancient monument. The evidence was led that Noh Mul falls under the whole Archaeological Department and there is an ancient site and no permit was given for them to remove any stone or any cover from that site. Basically a strange defence was run…two defences were put forward – one that the company had no idea that their equipment was used to destroy the Mayan ruin and the Court did not believe that because how can you not know that something as big as this is happening in your backyard and you do not knowthat so much of your heavy duty equipment was used and you had no idea, so the Court did not believe that argument. Secondly they were saying that this is not the first time that Noh Mul was used to build roads, and that from early back as the 90s and 80s other contractors used Noh Mul to do the same thing. So they were pretty much saying we were not the first tones…this was happening a long time ago. Based on the evidence she found that the Crown proved all the elements of the case and there was pretty much no defence because the evidence was overwhelming. There were eyewitnesses who say the actual excavation of the monument. Trucks and loaders were seen at the scene and they all had Demar’s Stone Company Ltd. You had a witness from the Traffic Department who came and said that these vehicles that we saw at the scene belonged to Demar’s. So the evidence was strong in terms of placing them at the scene.”
