…A Goal to Subsequently Revise Academic Curriculum

Luke Palacio

According to Palacio, it is now necessary to revise the existing curriculum to reflect a broader knowledge of the civics and history of Belize.

Luke Palacio, National President, B.N.T.U.

“We are hoping that they will also make a commitment or at least give an indication as to what other activities they would be engaged in in sensitizing the Belizean public as to the way forward in trying to bring about a peaceful resolution to this issue. We, from B.N.T.U. in particular, we will be, again, trying to get all sides to agree that it is time that this matter be taught in our schools.  We are hoping that if at any time soon we can, is to get the primary school curriculum to be revised to what it use to be in the past where you had instead of social studies covering all of those areas and aspects of our lives and our country, that we go back to teaching the civics of Belize, this history of Belize and the geography of Belize because unless our people understand and realize what our country is, how it is governed, how it is made up and all of these other things we might have some difficulties in trying to get some understanding to stand up and defend this country.”

The Belize National Teachers Union expects to roll out its sensitization campaign in each of the six districts in the weeks to come.
