UDP Holds Special Meeting to Determine Date of Leadership Convention

This Saturday the U.D.P. will hold a special meeting to determine the date of a convention to elect the first deputy party leader. Both Ministers Patrick Faber and John Saldivar are campaigning for the post which is likely to determine who will be the next leader of the United Democratic Party following the retirement of the current leader. Saldivar told the media on Thursday that he has the numbers.

John Saldivar, Candidate, U.D.P. Deputy Leader

“We play the ads on the news basically to keep the nation informed; the real battle is for the delegates, the six hundred or so delegates that will be voting in that convention. Certainly my campaign, I have been out already meeting with delegates individually and as groups in the various constituencies; that’s where the contest is. And I’m glad that we refer to it as a contest rather than a fight or a battle because as you have noted, Honorable Faber is my very good friend and when we come out of this, we will be one party and we will still be friends. So I feel very good about the support that I have been getting; as you know, this week I got a major endorsement from the enter Cayo caucus…all five of my colleagues from that district have endorsed me. And yesterday we released the endorsement of Honorable Papa Mena and I can say that in the next few days and weeks to come, more endorsements will be forthcoming. I can ensure that I have great support in our party, in the vicinity of maybe twenty or so of my colleagues. I feel very good. I think that what my colleagues are looking for, they see in me. One of the main things I have been hearing from them is a consensus builder—somebody that can unite the party—and my role and behavior in the past has always been one of being a conciliator, one of trying to make sure that we all get along. And I think my colleagues appreciate that about me and that’s one of the main qualities that they are looking for, besides of course the experience and maturity.”

“Sir adding to that, the point has been brought up that you have been in this game longer than Patrick Faber. Do you feel that you have the upper hand in that area?”

“Well I don’t like to use the word as upper hand, but yes, I’ve been a standard bearer in this party since 1994. Honorable Faber and I entered the house in the same term; he did a few months more than me…obviously I got in there in a bye-election. But I have been a standard bearer since 1994 so I’ve been around, my colleagues know me well. I’d like to say we’ve gotten along pretty well and like I said, they think that at this time, the party needs somebody that can unite all forces within the party and I think that’s what they’re going for.”
