Fr. Ruhl Says If You Don’t Understand Something Just Be Quiet

Matt Ruhl

Over the weekend, Father Matt delivered a rousing homily during the Sunday Mass.  The religious lecture touched on everything, including recent statements made against the Dugu ceremony.

“Now you delivered a rather powerful homily on Sunday discussing this very same issue.  In terms of the reception from your congregation, I’m almost certain that they weren’t prepared for that topic to be the order of the day of your Sunday Mass.  How was that?”

Father Matt Ruhl, Jesuit Priest, St. Martin’s de Porres

“Well, the thing is, we talk now.  So we’ve had the resurrection and a Christian has got to be three things.  He’s got to be a thinker.  You cannot call yourself a Christian if you don’t think.  We’re all little theologians, we’re all looking for understanding in our faith, okay.  So you’ve got to be a thinker and you’ve got to be a prayer and you’ve got to be a doer and I think sometimes people say things that are… and Catholics are particularly sensitive because since I’ve been here in Belize I’ve heard all the insults, that we worship statues.  No!  We don’t worship statues!  The pope is the Anti-Christ.  Really!  The pope is the Anti-Christ, that’s news to me.  Okay so, it really behooves a Christian to be a man or a woman of thought.  Okay theology means faith, seeking understanding.  Any Christian who has faith who doesn’t try to buttress that faith with an intellectual understanding what do you say about him?  What can you say?  And so it’s really important that if you don’t understand Catholicism or if you don’t understand the Garinagu or if you don’t understand Hispanic or Maya then shhh.  Just respect, just respect.  If you can’t go to the trouble of researching what you’re about to talk about then don’t talk about it.”

Every few months I see new churches and pastors take to the podium and preach as if they know it all…as if they have lived it all…I am from San Pedro and there was this one pastor who placed his shows on local television…I happen to browse his show once with a friend and we decided to listen in.. What caught our attention was the fact the he said ” I know what you are feeling” “I know how it is”. The topic was being gay. What…we asked ourselves…did this pastor just confess to being gay. No…we know he did not…but it was his lack of research and his use of words which can get you into trouble. But then sometimes pastors have too much pride and have no idea what they are saying…just like my San Pedro pastor did…
