National Sports Council Under Fire for Parking Fees at MCC

A little over a month ago there was public concern over the construction of a parking lot at the MCC Grounds by the Princess Group. News Five investigated and found what seemed to be a win-win scenario for the Sports Council. The Princess would fund the parking lot as well as the construction of a security booth. The Sports Council would get the use of the lot for games or events, while the Hotel and Casino would use it only at night. As icing on the cake, the Princess would also pay a monthly fee to the Sports Council for the duration of a five month contract. It seemed like a pretty good deal all around until this past weekend when football fans wanting to park inside the MCC were charged five dollars for that privilege. As we found out today, they should probably get used to the idea, since that’s the Council’s plan to generate income to pump back into the MCC.

“Now that we come to the game at the appointed time they want to charge us five dollars. I don’t think that is a proper rate for the parking space and we old football players that have played on the MCC Grounds for many years have to pay five dollars to park our vehicle to come support the fans and the football players. What is going on with the football association and the Sports Council? We want to know the bottom line of what is happening. This is what I have to say now. Me and my boys are real old fans of the football association and have come to support football. So we want to know what’s going on with the Sport Council now with this parking lot. We want to get the real bottom line.”

“What we have done is that we have used the parking lot as a sort of backdrop where we can make some money to keep the facility…keep the field because every time the game is over the field needs to be planted with grass and this sort of stuff. It was our staff that was out there collecting because we need to know that if we need something to move forward we need to invest in it and investment is what we need to do in the Sports Council so that we can get better results in what we’re doing What happened is that truly if you look at the facility I think anybody that was there this weekend could have seen that the while perimeter around the football field was painted and that’s even before we got started. These things come into play and as they come into play we need to pay for the upgrades we are doing. We are trying to make as much money as we can off the MCC so it can become self-sufficient. For too long we have been living where we think all things are free in Belize and all facilities are free and they haven’t been maintained. Right now if you look at the MCC the fence needs to be changed around the football pitch. Where do we get the money to do this sort of stuff? So every time we’re having a game I want to tell the public that our staff is going to be out there collecting for the parking. It’s not going to be given to anyone renting the field. That money will be made by the Sports Council solely.”
