Football and Basketball Stats in Sports

Good evening, I’m James Adderley and this is Sports Monday.

The playoff picture inside the PLB closing season is taking shape but there are some crucial back matches remaining that could propel a few teams on to the inside the lane. In Belize City yesterday the Belize Defense Force made a big jump to the top of the standings in its matchup with Wagiya FC at the MCC Grounds. The B.D.F. looks to open the scoreboard early off  with this unforced error at midfield by Wagiya – Harrison Tasher is given the task to complete the possession but the right foot push is right at goalkeeper Glenford Chimilio. Mark Arzu then attacks off the right wing with this on the run blast only to find Chimilio still on top of things. The military gets a quick visit to the showers when in frustration he takes down Wagiya defense Erwin Middleton and it’s a straight red. The B.D.F. is down to 10. At the 32nd minute of the ballgame Mark Arzu mounts this inside the box and the right foot drop is perfect, Chimilio is beaten and the B.D.F. gives up 1 – zip. Five minutes later this drop finds Ricky Ricketts in stride – he easily heals Glenford Chimilio who came off his line and scores into an empty net to give the B.D.F. a 2 – zip lead.

Just before the half expires, Raymond Ramos grounds this corner kick to Harrison Tasher – the heel play finds Osmar Duran and it’s a 3 – zip lead at the intermission. In 2nd half play Harrison Tasher gets this ball to Duran whose attempt to double his tally is blocked by Erwin Middleton. Off the Griga bench Kevin Lino has this open look at goal to get Griga on to the scoreboard but Tevin Gamboa shuts him down. Yep, frustration ain’t no fun – as Middleton pushes Osmar Duran to prevent him from scoring – the referee rules penalty. Harrison Tasher gets the call only to be embarrassed by the skill of goalkeeper Glenford Chimilio. The 3 – zip holds up and the Belize Defense Force streak to the top of the standings with 17 points. In the other results from the weekend Verdes FC doubled the Belmopan Bandits 2 to 1 yesterday at the Norman Broaster Stadium in what may view as an upset. Belmopan Bandits how 15 points and will finish the season against the Placencia Assassins Thursday night. The Police are in third place with 14 points and will face the B.D.F. Thursday night at the Norman Broaster; Placencia is next with 7 points and Wagiya with 3. Meanwhile the Police and the Bandits are the only 2 teams eligible to see CONCACAF champions play and the police are in the driver’s seat on March 31st they’ll play Wagiya and on the April 2nd they conclude the season against the Placencia Assassins at the Michael Ashcroft. The BDF could win the season if they beast the Police on Thursday night and handle Verdes on Sunday April 3rd.

Turning to the basketball scene, the NEBL All Star night was staged at the UB Gym inside Belmopan Saturday night. The Wings Stop Skills Challenge boiled down to this showdown between Caleb Sutton of San Pedro Tigersharks and Leroy Lauriano of Smart Belize Hurricanes – Caleb Sutton got the nod from the judges. Marcel Orosco hit 14 shots in the final round of the 3 point contest against Nick Brown of Bandits to claim this year’s title. In the Slam Dunk Winston Pratt of Cayo Western Ballaz posted the only 50 of the night with this monster. However he was not around at money time. Andrew Ortiz of Tigersharks had the chance to take it but this offering wasn’t good enough and the win goes to Caleb Sutton of San Pedro Tigersharks whose monster dunk gave him this year’s title. As for the All Star game Caleb Sutton of San Pedro ties the proceeding with the drive through traffic as both North and South show 82 points. Ashton Edwards then knocks down the long three to give the North a 1 point lead. And then Mr. MVP Farron Lauriano gets the easy 2 down low to give the north 87 to 84 big W over the South. Lauriano struck for the game high 34 points to walk away with MVP honors. Now here is the results form league play over the weekend; Friday night Belize City No Limit showed Cayo Western Ballaz in an 85 to 61 blow out at Big Birds Isle. The Dangriga Warriors jolted Smart Belize Hurricanes 72 to 54. The San Pedro Tigersharks gobbled Independence Thunderbolts 99 to 82 and Belmopan Bandits handed Orange Walk Running Rebels a 98 to 67 loss. Games will resume on Friday April 1st after the Easter holidays.
