CARICOM Issues Release in Support of Belize on Sarstoon Fiasco

Belize’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs appears unsure about what happened in the Sarstoon on Saturday, and maintains that Guatemala is being mature, and its behavior impeccable. But interestingly, CARICOM does not share that opinion. In a very strong release issued today from the Secretariat in Guyana, CARICOM expresses grave concern over the incident, and states, “The Guatemalan Armed Forces entered Belizean internal waters and acted in an intimidating manner towards the Belizean forces at their Forward Operating Base on Belize’s mainland at the mouth of the Sarstoon River.”  CARICOM supports Belize’s position that the border is the mid-channel of the Sarstoon and added that it, “deeply regrets any actions of the GAF which violate the sovereignty of Belize and attempt to change the status quo prior to the submission of the Guatemalan claim to Belizean territory to the International Court of Justice in accordance with the Special Agreement ratified by both parties.”  In closing, CARICOM reiterates its strong and unequivocal support for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Belize and calls on the government of Guatemala to agree to confidence building measures to ensure peace and stability along its southern border with Guatemala.

Thank you CARICOM brethren for your support. We badly need it. It means a lot to many of us. We look forward towards that continued support. God bless.

So let me get this straight: while a foreign body like CARICOM “expresses grave concern over the incident,” and states, “The Guatemalan Armed Forces entered Belizean internal waters and acted in an intimidating manner towards the Belizean forces,” our own Foreign Minister maintains that, “Guatemala is being mature, and its behavior impeccable.” Does he really have Belize’s interest at heart?

Between the “artificial border” statement a couple years ago and this latest fiasco, we have to wonder, is Elrington getting Guatemalan payoffs or something?
