A Ban on All Guatemalan Imports?

Geovanni Brackett

In the aftermath of last Saturday’s armed confrontation, the Belize Territorial Volunteers have come under heavy criticism for unsolicited visits to the Sarstoon area.  It is strongly believed that the BTV-led expeditions into the area under dispute have only served to increase hostility between armed forces on both sides of the southern border.  Earlier today, Brackett dispelled that notion.

Geovanni Brackett, President, COLA

“We also at COLA want to denounce any insinuation that all of this is as a result of these excursions conducted by the BTV.  That is not the case.  The BTV has only gone to highlight the reality and to reveal what has been done on the ground and the gravity of the situation.  Out of these events COLA believes that there are several things that need to be done.  We believe that there’s a call for serious action.  By that we mean that Belize should stop importing all Guatemalan products.  What we export to Guatemala is miniscule compared to what we import and so Melchor thrives on our economy.  We should cease and desist from all importing of Guatemalan products.  Secondly, we should translate that action to CARICOM and Commonwealth partners to internationalize it and ask them our brethrens in those communities to join us in taking similar actions.  It is very sad to see when the CARICOM Secretary General and them make very strong statements, even stronger statements than our own representatives.  It is like a teacher willing to defend a student when the parent just leaves that student to be bullied by any other person.  And so we have outsiders who are willing to step in at COLA and our government is not prepared because of either cowardice or one person even asked me the question: What is restraining our officials from actually internationalizing this issue, as we have seen has [happened] and the tensions have increased.  We believe also that we should cease and desist from all passports and giving Belizean citizenship to all Guatemalans until this claim is settled.”

COLA continues its call for the construction of the forward operating base at the mouth of the Sarstoon River.

    @Jason
    feel free to stone this man if asking yourself what have you done about this issue we face?
    Instead of agreeing with the man that yes a ban on all guatemalans not be given citizenship nor residential permits starting from now would probably help until something is solved.
    but instead try bring down the effort this man is doing. He may not be good for politics but at least brings more positive ideas than you.

    HE IS NOT IDIOT, HE IS DEFENDING THE RIGHTS OF YOUR CHILDREN ALSO !!!
    GIVING GUATEMALAN NATIONALITY TAKES AWAY YOUR SONS AND DAUGHTERS OPPORTUNITIES IN THIS COUNTRY. ONE GUATEMALAN BRINGS IN 20 MORE INTO YOUR COUNTRY, SEE THE POINT?
    SO MR. WIL MAHEIA IS NOT IDIOT, HE IS DOING A GOOD SERVICE TO YOUR CHILDREN.
