B.D.F. Commander Says Sarstoon Problem is Result of Inconsistent Political Directives

Following the National Security Meeting on Monday, Prime Minister Dean Barrow credited the defusing of the situation at the Sarstoon on Sunday to Brigadier-General David Jones – more specifically, the relationship Jones has with the highest-ranking military officer in Guatemala. It is through communication between those two men on Saturday that the Guatemalan military was ordered to back off. Today, Jones told News Five that much of the problem lies in the conflicting orders being given to the military at the Sarstoon by their political leaders.

“That is where the friction is and that is where we need a political solution. On the ground we have the soldiers giving conflicting orders that can lead to conflict and that’s the concern that I discussed with the Guatemalan General. We’ve both been given opposing directives and because of that there could be conflict in the area, but as military professionals, we want to avoid that. We discussed that there needs to be a definitive solution or a protocol at least until both countries decide what they want to achieve. But in the interim and as a matter of urgency we need to have a protocol in the Sarstoon between Belize and Guatemala because absence of that, there could be some serious incident in the Sarstoon area. So he has agreed that he wants peace in the area; I want peace in the area so with that being the end state, let us work together and achieve it. So if the meeting with the foreign ministers from both countries isn’t as successful as we would like it, we are going to propose that we meet again at the political level, military and tactical level…all meet in the same room so that when we come to a resolution, everyone is singing from the same song sheet. Where everybody understands what is expected in the Sarstoon; be it military to military or military to civilian or whoever traverses the area so that everyday who goes in the area knows exactly what is expected of them and how the military forces will operate while they are operating in the Sarstoon.”
