Police Officers Meet and Greet in North Creek

Chester Williams

Earlier in the newscast, Assistant Commissioner of Police Chester Williams gave an update on the recent homicides in Belize City. News Five caught up with him during the department’s weekly community policing initiative. This time, the officers of Eastern Division South were meeting with residents in the neighborhood of North and South Creek, where recently criminal activities in that area are far and few.

ACP Chester Williams, Regional Commander, Eastern Division South

“We continue our usual community policing work, the meet and greet being one of those initiatives under community policing. And today as you rightly said, we are targeting North and South Creek, this general area, and yes, right close to us we have the Supal Street area that has been named as one of the hotspots for south side Belize City. We also have a permanent police patrol in that area, but I can say that the area of Supal Street has gone somewhat quiet—not fully quiet and we are not taking it lightly. Despite the fact that there has been little happening in Supal Street, we still maintain our presence in the area and separate and apart from the police presence, we still do mobile patrols in the area and from time to time we do special operations which is based on intelligence-led policing. Again, we are adamant about maintaining law and order on south side Belize City and we believe that through these different initiatives that we can reach out to those persons who are willing to work with us, who are willing to make a change; who are willing to live a life of peace and less violence. The residents of this area are happy and satisfied with the work of the police. The only thing they are asking for is to see more police presence. But they are also saying that they have seen a reduction in criminal activities within their neighborhoods itself. They are also asking us to work with them to establish a neighborhood watch group.”
