C-Wills Cleans Up at Garifuna Music Awards

Garifuna parandero C-Wills has won a total of five awards at the recently held Garifuna Music Awards in New York.  The ceremony was held on Saturday at the Hostos Center for Arts and Culture.  Apart from being named the Best New Artist, C-Wills also snagged the coveted Album of the Year Award for his debut release Garifuna Nuguya.  He returned to Belize today and stopped by our studio to discuss his accomplishments.

Clayton ‘C-Wills’ Williams, Award Winning Parandero

“I was nominated for eight different awards and came out with five of them.  The awards, the nominations were online and people voted online for the awards.”

Isani Cayetano

“What is your inspiration behind your career as parandero, a young parandero at that?”

“Well for me growing up in a village like Hopkins, I grew up in a music family.  I played drums from the Drumming Center from a very young age, from age seven and all of that inspiration is from the culture, my family, the way how we live, just the village life, you know.”

Isani Cayetano

“Now, of the five awards that you’ve won which one is the most coveted?

Clayton ‘C-Wills’ Williams

“To me it’s the album of the year because I released the GariFuna Nuguya album last May and big up Junie Mar, he is the producer for this album and to me dis da di biggest award.  Fi get Album of the Year as a young Garifuna artist like myself I feel good and proud, you know.”

Isani Cayetano

“And what was it like competing against other established Garifuna musicians to come out on top?”

Clayton ‘C-Wills’ Williams

“The feeling at the awards, I was nervous, you know and getting nominated along with all these big musicians like myself, you know, I just came out successful.”

Isani Cayetano

“Talk to us about your music.  I know that you are a young parandero, you have been influential in terms of performing across the country, but talk to us a bit about the public reception to your music.”

Clayton ‘C-Wills’ Williams

“Okay, so ever since I released the song Garifuna Nuguya that song has been a hit song for all the Garinagu people, you know.  All around the world, not only Belize.  I’ve done shows in LA, I’ve done shows in New York, I’ve done shows in Chicago for Belize Day we headlined on the big stage.  So the fans really appreciate it, you know, and Garifuna people are really behind me.  They expect me to be something, as young as myself they say, “Oh yo di be like Andy P now”  So I have to keep that, I have to keep it going and inspire the young people, inspire the youths.”
