Consumers Will Get Benefits at Next Tariff Review

John Avery

B.E.L.’s submission included a proposed increase in the Mean Electricity Rate from thirty-five cents per kilowatt hour to thirty-nine cents.

John Avery, Chairman, Public Utilities Commission

“So at the next rate review there will still be some corrections to be made in the favor of consumers because during this six months period we’re in the amount we approved for cost of power, B.E.L. is spending below that.  So that will again be served to reduce the rates further, depending on the investments and other expenses incurred by B.E.L.  But to put it quite simply, as I explained, the MER, the Mean Electricity Rate is the average rate.  Different classes of customers pay different rates.  After B.E.L. charges all of these, the average rate is expected to be around the thirty-six point four-three cents.  Basically if you want to understand the full impact of the rates you would likely have to compare this with the rates that were approved last year.  Unfortunately, I don’t know if we have those available but it’s available on the PUC website.”

B.E.L. has invested approximately one hundred and seventy-three million dollars in the countrywide delivery of electricity over the current full tariff period.
