Protesters Outside House Say Barrow Administration is Failed Leadership

Wil Maheia

Outside the House this morning about seventy-five protesters from the Belize Territorial Volunteers, the Northern Territorial Volunteers and from Mayan villages down South protested what they say is failed leadership. There are different issues, but all surround what these Belizeans claim is government failing to assert sovereignty over Belizean territory and worse, ceding territory to Guatemala little by little.

Wil Maheia, Belize Territorial Volunteers

“San Benito Poite, Guatemalan deh in deh; Jalacte, Guatemalan deh in deh; San Vicente, Guatemalan deh in deh. But even worse and more embarrassing than that, deep down into the Bladen Nature Reserve, the Jewel of Central America and the Caribbean, Guatemalan deh in deh right now as we speak. Last week when that brazen Guatemalan gunboat come right in front of the B.D.F.—if the B.D.F. throw fishing line it would have gotten into the Guatemalan boat. It was so close to the B.D.F. and not a B.D.F. came out and intercept that boat. So we need the B.D.F. to start doing its job; stop having the Guatemala bully us. Last two week, pasture gone up ina Dolores and nobody noh di stop them. If you or me as a Belizean go dah Dolores or any of those villages right now, the law wah come down on we. We need the law to come down on the Guatemalans as well.”

“The Guatemalan incursions is affecting a lot of people. In San Jose for example, they have stolen horses already. Actually there was a guy who got killed; who got shot and nobody was arrested for that. So that is why we are here to demand all these thing, to get something done for Toledo.”
