Opposition Leader on Sarstoon Debacle

This morning P.U.P. Leader John Briceño met with Prime Minister Dean Barrow at his office on Coney Drive in Belize City. It was a courtesy visit, but it comes at a time when the debate on the Sarstoon is raging. After the meeting Briceño confirmed that it did come up as a point of discussion. He told News Five that the Party has agreed that they must be fully engaged in the ongoing Belize/Guatemala discussion and that is why one of his first acts as leader was the appointment of an advisory committee made up of five former Foreign Ministers. He says the objective is to find a definitive solution to the matter, always with the focus on keeping our territory intact.

“We did discuss that issue with the Prime Minister. We believe in the PUP that the Guatemalans were wrong, that the Guatemalans were in our territory and that we should take strong diplomatic action. We believe that we should send a very strongly worded letter or diplomatic note to the Guatemalans telling them that they were in our territory and that we will not allow them to do that, that they are in our territorial waters and we stand by that position. We also believe that we need to probably consider internationalizing what is happening on the ground. I have seen what Foreign Ministers of both countries have been attempting to do, to try to show that as person to person they do get along and they are trying to find a solution, but the reality on the ground is that is not happening. We have massive incursions into our territory especially in the Chiquibul…we have the panning of gold where they are poisoning our water, they are slash and burning large areas of land, stealing our artifacts, stealing our wood and even issued of narco-traffickers coming into our land to plant marijuana. We need to be able to address those issues as quickly as possible. And now this last issue where we had a group of Belizeans who wanted to visit the Sarstoon. The Guatemalan military has decided that they will not allow us to go in our own country and I don’t think we need to take that lightly. We need to make that known to the world, what Guatemala is doing and that we find it unacceptable and we need to do everything possible for other countries to know what is happening on the ground.”
