Will There be More Civil House Meetings in the Near Future?

As we told you, all those matters of national importance were discussed by Briceño and the Prime Minister this morning. But outside of that, the leaders also discussed the level of discourse in the House. It’s gotten to the point where constructive debate is a rarity and expressions of respect are non-existent. But Briceño hopes that will change in the very near future.

John Briceño, PUP Leader

John Briceno

“Under my leadership and this new government because they were just recently elected…that there could be a different level of discourse…that we could raise the level of debate…that we should debate the issues and that we should challenge one another on the issues but we do not need to be nasty, we do not need to be negative, we do not need to be name-calling and attacking one another. There’s no need for that. We were not elected because you are the person that can be the nastiest in the National Assembly. You were elected because the people have the confidence that you’re going to represent them best. I for one don’t believe in name-calling. I believe that we should debate the issues and there’s no need to be hating one another. There’s no need for the hate and dislike. Wherever we turn we meet one another. We need to lower down the rhetoric because when you raise that kind of rhetoric in the House it translates to your supporters and they believe that they should behave in that fashion, and then you see people out there fighting for politics and that is not what we want.”

Well said Mr. Briceno. Belizean people need to learn to have more dignity and class in the way they/we disagree with one another and in the way issues are tackled. Our leaders need to lead by example. This influences how people carry themselves. You rightly said it though…”…your supporters and they believe that they should behave in that fashion, and then you see people out there fighting for politics…”

All the best in your leadership.
