RED Police Institute New Controls for Ruta Maya River Challenge

Sr. Supt. Edward Broaster

The much anticipated four day La Ruta Maya canoe race, from the Hawkesworth Bridge to Belize City, kicks off in just a little over two weeks. It’s a race which rivals the Cross Country in participation and in support. With so many persons in one place, and in a festive sort of mood, there are usually problems. This year officers from the Rural Eastern Division are determined to minimize those problems, and are addressing crowd control and excessive indulgence.

Sr. Supt. Edward Broaster, Commander, Rural Eastern Division

“We want the general public to be aware and to understand how we in the Rural Eastern Division will be policing this event. We will be setting up checkpoints at the Burrell Boom Police Station. We will have one at the Burrell boom junction with the Phillip Goldson Highway and we will have another checkpoint at the manatee Lookout. This is to ensure that we capture any individual driving under the influence of alcohol and to deter those who are speeding on the highways. We will have additional patrols in certain key areas so as to prevent any accident or life of life during this event. We know that in the past a lot of people congregate on the Haulover Bridge. We will prevent individuals from congregating on the bridge before the canoes near the bridge. And we will also prevent vehicles from slowing and stopping on the bridge. Nevertheless when the race nears the bridge we will allow – close one lane to allow people to go on the bridge and witness the race. Immediately after that we will remove them and open back traffic and have hopefully a safe event.”
