Police Attempt Positive Intervention in Mahogany Heights

As we’ve told you, the Rural Eastern Division is paying particular attention to the community of Mahogany Heights, near mile thirty on the George Price Highway. It’s traditionally been a neglected area where a lot of crime originates and spreads into surrounding communities. The Police don’t just plan to rush in G.S.U. style, though. They’re going the route of community policing, through sports, agriculture and positive interaction..

“We had on the fourteenth of February a peace marathon with the youths at risk, with different members of different gangs playing basketball. Yesterday we ended the marathon. We had four teams participating. A local team specifically with youths from Mahogany Heights won the first place championship. As a matter of fact it was Mr. Jerson Grinage’s team. We are there to work with the youths and hoping to divert them from any negativity and see how we go forward in relation to the community programs that are in place for them and for us to establish and reinforce.”

Sr. Supt. Edward Broaster

Sr. Supt. Edward Broaster, Commander, Rural Executive Division

“Saturday afternoon we had a lecture with fourth form students from the Anglican Cathedral College at Crooked Tree where we spoke to them about the dangers of getting involved with drugs and crime, violence, gangs and so forth, and what they can do to generate employment when they come out of school if they’re not going on to higher education but the emphasis was to go on and get that higher education. With respect to those young people at Mahogany Heights, Mr. Chan is embarking on working with the Ministry of Education to try to get them set up with a bee project, because that area has been infested with bees, and sometimes problems can become profitable. So they’re going to be working with that project where they are going to try to capture the bees, build some hives in the area and produce honey.”
