Will Elderly Honduran Woman Serve Time for Human Trafficking?

Estella Gonzalez

A mitigation plea was heard today for a sixty-four year old Honduran grandmother living in Belize for over twenty years.  On February tenth, 2016, the grandmother was found guilty of human trafficking of a fifteen year old Honduran girl after the girl gave compelling testimony of how she was brought to Belize under false pretences and then put to work at a bar the grandmother owned where she was also forced into having sex fir a pittance. Today, at the end of hours of submissions in front of Judge Adolph Lucas of the Supreme Court, he was left with the task of what sentence to impose upon Estella Gonzalez after having to take into consideration, an impact assessment of her young victim.  Estella herself spoke expressing remorse for entertaining a minor at her bar and saying that prison is not conducive to her health because she has to take ten bills a day due to the bad food. She said she will die if she remains behind bars. Two doctors, Doctors Fernando Cuellar and Javier Novelo, also agreed that jail is not the most suitable place for Estella since she suffers from chronic diabetes and hypertension. Cuellar said that if not properly treated Estella’s complications will rapidly deteriorate and this is why he recommends that considerations be given for proper nutrition and exercise as well as frequent lab testing for her. Novelo told the court that while behind bars she suffered an anxiety attack and that if Estella should go into a crisis, the prison does not have the adequate facility to care for her.   Sentencing has been deferred for February twenty-third, 2016.

Naawww, she does actually suffer from Diabetes and Hypertension. I’m not saying that from heresay, that’s first hand experience. It won’t do her any good putting her in an overcrowded, inadequately funded, supervised and dilapidated prison. Fine her and keep moving. ….. will pay. It was a greedy immigration officer who let the bust happen anyway. Thought he wasn’t getting his fare share.

  3. Elgin Martinez says:

Belizeans are being sent to jail everyday what makes her different. Why didn’t she thought about her health prior to committing such crime.

  4. Al says:

When the minor was crying because her body was not conducive to be raped repeatedly time and time again, I didn’t hear no doctor or lawyer report for leniency. Jail her . set an example that these things will not be tolerated. belize has been blacklisted where human trafficking is concerned. Hopefully the real proper authorities are following up on this case. Of course no word from the so called “First Lady” who is soooooooo sympathetic towards young women’s plight.
