Building in Spanish Lookout Almost Completely Destroyed by Fire

Rolando Reimer

On Wednesday, we showed you the images of Country Foods in Spanish Lookout engulfed in flames. At about three p.m., a fire spread to the warehouse from a nearby pit which contained burning garbage. The warehouse was used to store egg trays and packaging used for the safe transportation of products. Seventy-five percent of the warehouse and goods were gutted by the blaze. Firefighters in the community, arrived on scene shortly after and were able to contain the blaze, but by that time, there was significant damage. Fire Chief Rolando Reimer spoke to News Five on the blaze.

On the Phone: Rolando Reimer, Fire Chief, Spanish Lookout Fire Department

“Upon responding, arriving on the scene, we noted that it was the complete storage building was engulfed in flames already. We got our back up, we got our water source; B.N.E. came and assisted. We extinguished the fire pretty quickly—I’d say within half an hour or so—but then the smoldering part finally everything was overhauled and everything, it took us all the way to eight o’clock in the evening. The cause of the fire; they have a fire pit on the west side of the building where they burn their trash—egg trays and all their trash. They lit the fire and then the wind change and came from the west instead of the east and then sparks flew into the building where they have their storage of new egg trays. It caught fire and since it was a very dry day, it was enflamed within minutes, the whole building.”

“Sir, the structure and the contents…did the owners speak of the value of it, the loss that they sustained?”

On the Phone: Rolando Reimer

“The value, I’m not so sure about it, but the estimate I would say is roughly about seventy-five percent of their total inventory yeah. And that would include the building. The building was destroyed at least seventy-five percent.”
