P.U.P. Says Ministry of Agriculture Has No Vision

John Briceño

The departure of Fruta Bomba is only the most recent of a series of bad news for Belize where industries are concerned. Since last year the country has been taking some hard hit, particularly in the area of agriculture. P.U.P. leader John Briceño says there’s a simple explanation for that – the Ministry of Agriculture has had no vision and no plan.

John Briceño, P.U.P. Leader

“These issues did not come overnight. We knew that they were coming and there should have been better preparation from the Ministry and the Government so they could have prepared the people that are being directly affected by these issues. For example with the drought in the North, the Ministry of Agriculture estimated that our farmers lost at least thirty million dollars. As I pointed out in the National Assembly, the government in its election spree in the month of October spent forty-four point seven million dollars. Of that forty-four point seven million dollars only twenty thousand dollars was allocated to assist these farmers who lost thirty million dollars. So obviously there is no real concern on the part of the government. Approximately three hundred and fifty million dollars has been blown away using the Petrocaribe funds and a lot of that money could have been put to better use, especially in the productive sector, in the agriculture sector where we have been having all these challenges. As you pointed out the citrus greening continues to affect us. The production has gone from close to seven million boxes per year to under five million boxes per year, and it continues to decline. Shrimp was hit by a virus so pretty much all the shrimp has been wiped out and probably it will be another six months before they get into production. We have a thousand acres of banana that is just rotting in the field. Sugar has gone from seventy-five dollars a ton to thirty-five dollars a ton for the sugar cane. Here we have papayas that’s closing its doors. The Commercial Free Zone at the border is going through a slow death and we do not see a government addressing these issues. There’s no sense of urgency with the government. It seems that all they were concerned about was to try to win the next elections. Yes they have won but at what price.”

  1. Dah weh di betta deh weh mi yet fi come? says:

See what I said in a previous comment? Barrow dah wah “liar” lawyer, not a business man. He even lied himself with “betta is yet to come” thinking Petrocaribe would have been there forever. Mr. Briceno, I guess you came in at the right time. Time to rescue the economy. It is disgusting to read how the BARROW GOVAMENT only helped the farmers with twenty thousand dollars out of a whopping forty four million they blew away. More disgusting that because of the meager help to the farmers they lost THIRTY MILLION DOLLARS!!!! CAN YOU IMAGINE THAT. THEY STILL DRUNK AND FOOL FOOL WITH THAT “TACOS AND PIBIL.”
A BUSINESS VENTURE DON’T JUST FAIL OVER NIGHT. AND LOOKS LIKE EVERYTHING IN THE AGRICULTURE SECTOR IS FAILING. WHAT ELSE DO WE EXPORT? NADA!!! LOOK AT THE TOURISM SECTOR? THAT MAY SOON GO TO THE DOGS TOO BECAUSE OF SO MUCH CRIME WITH THE TOURISTS. NOT ONLY THAT, LOOK AT WHAT IS HAPPENING WITH THAT SECTOR, INFIGHTING BECAUSE OF PREFERENTIAL TREATMENT TO CERTAIN PEOPLE. ALL BECAUSE OF SOME SELFISH PEOPLE ONLY THINKING OF FILLING THEIR POCKETS.
BARROW SEEMED TO BE A CUSTODIAN BUT NOW THAT DON’T SEEM TO BE TRUE. THE MAN PICKED WAH BIG FIGHT WITH ASHCROFT AND THE ELECTRIC COMPANY FROM CANADA ALL FI TURN DI PEOPLE AGAINST PUP. IN THE END HE TURN AROUND AND BLOW OUT PETROCARIBE TO THE SAME ASHCROFT AND THE DEBT IS STILL NOT CLEARED YET. I READ WHERE THEY ARE WORRIED BECAUSE VENEZUELAN MONEY FINISHED AND A FINAL JUDGEMENT IS YET TO COME. MR. FINANCIAL SECRETARY SEEMED WORRIED IN THAT NEWSCAST.
Mr. Briceno, you have wah challenge before you but this can only make you prove to be the better solution for the country.

  2. Belizean Ag Student in The US says:

what we need is more professionals in the field. We need more Belizeans to pursue degrees in the Ag field. How can agriculture be one of our biggest economy and we dont even have professionals in the field.
How can you appoint a minister to be over the ministry of Ag, if that person dont know anything about Ag. We dont need people to be doing guess work in our departments, we want skilled people who are specialized in the different fields: Agriculture Education, Agriculture Economics, Ag. Engineering, Biotechnology, Animal Science, Plant Science, Veterinary Technology, Horticulture, just to name a few..
What have the ministry being doing to help develop the minds of young people to encourage the involvement in Agriculture?
COME ON GOB IT IS TIME FOR A NEW REVOLUTION!!!!!
