K.H.M.H. Increases Clinic Fees

Norman Augustine Jr.

Representatives from the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital have been making the media rounds this week talking about the good things happening at the national referral hospital and there are many, including successful heart surgeries and a general expansion on the line-up of services now offered. But there is one issue that is not going down well because beginning this coming Monday, the K.H.M.H. will be increasing clinic fees in some areas:  Both Doctor Adrian Coye, the C.E.O. of the K.H.M.H., and Norman Augustine Junior, the Director of Finance, explain.

Norman Augustine Jr., Director of Finance, K.H.M.H.

“The accident and emergency is one thing; you come in, you have an accident or you have a situation, you have an infected throat, whatever…that is in a different area and that is still ten dollars. Even though on average it is costing us a hundred and seven dollars per person, the ten dollars is just a small contribution. That is completely separate. The clinic fee is more elective. Now accident and emergency you have to go there now; the clinic is more elective when you go to see a specialist.”

“Depending on the specialist you see, it is actually fifteen dollars which is what I wanted to get to because people are saying it’s gone from ten dollars to twenty-five so they are saying that it a hundred and fifty percent increase. But fifteen dollars to a twenty-five is, I think, sixty-seven percent increase. But even if you shift it around from that perspective, the value for the service that you get is still highly subsidized. And we will not deny service and access to patients and we will find as best as we can to accommodate and recognize…because even if you are billed and can’t pay the bill, at some point we may have to go through and we do go through a process with our social worker to figure out really if this is truly indigent in that sense and this is something then that we negotiate with the government of Belize.”
