Senior Cyclist Claims the Sport Has Not Grown Under CFB

Ray Cattouse

According to Ray Cattouse, C-Ray is one of the only clubs in the history of cycling in Belize to annually field a junior team, a youth team, a female team, an elite team and a master’s team.  He says that there have been tensions between the federation and cyclists due to the lack of growth in the sport and an unleveled cycling field.

Ray Cattouse, C-Ray Cycling Club

“We need to grow the sport of cycling. Where is the elite pool coming from in years to come? Not from the junior? What are they doing, what program do they have from the time they took office. See we have a program that we are going to build the females and the juniors and the rest of the cycling world to bring it to this level; they don’t have nothing more than a race here and a race there. So what they are doing is stifling female cycling in this country. Every step of the way with this federation is a fight for me and my daughter to get some kind of equality in female cycling. If you can remember just a year or two ago, we had this big fight with the federation because they insist that the females cannot race alone, they must race along with the juniors. Only a couple of the females, three or four I can say, can keep up with the juniors. So what happen with the rest of the female pool? They all get discouraged and stop. But me and Kaya hang in there and fought them every step of the way until now the female cyclists have their own race apart. Now it’s another fight and we are going to fight this fight again until we get it right.  If you notice, from the day this crowd took office, there is no youth team, there is no master’s team and I do not support what this federation is doing. I do not support it. From they took office over three years ago, I asked the federation—both Mister Dion Leslie and Orson Butler—I have some concerns. Can I please sit down with you people and have a chat? Three years now and that cannot happen. And I will not return full power to cycling and support cycling in the fullest until they can sit down with Ray Cattouse and hear my concerns; at least hear it. They have not done that thus far and they don’t want to do it.”
