14 Pounds of Weed in Vehicle Wrecked by Drunken Driver

Roland Rivers

A Belize City man is lucky to be out on bail tonight and luckier to be alive after he got drunk and slammed his red Ford Escape into a tree at Mile sixteen on the Phillip Goldson Highway. The accident happened very early this morning. When Ladyville Police responded to the scene they saw thirty-four-year-old Roland Rivers sitting in his vehicle which was badly damaged. On the back seat, they saw at least forty cans of Brahman beer, a significant portion of them empty. They figured out who had drunk that beer when Rivers was asked to get out of the vehicle and could barely stand up. The story gets more interesting. On the passenger seat next to Rivers, police discovered a black plastic bag with approximately fourteen pounds of marijuana in it. Police believe that when Rivers approached the Boom junction he noticed a Police checkpoint there and got spooked, tried to elude them and lost control. The very intoxicated man was escorted to the Ladyville Police Station where he was charged for Drug Trafficking, Driving With Alcohol Content Above the Prescribed Limit and Driving Without Due Care and Attention. Rivers was arraigned this morning and pleaded guilty. He was offered and met bail in the sum of eight thousand dollars plus one surety in the same amount. He is due back in Court on April first.
